Pets

British people love pets. About 43% of homes have got a pet. Dogs and cats are the most popular pets. There are about 10 million dogs and 10 million cats in the UK. British people spend 2 billion pounds every year on food on their pets.
The most popular names for dogs are Molly and Charlie and the most popular name for cats is Tigger. The most popular breed of dog is the Labrador and most people get their dogs from rescue centres.
Other popular pets in the UK are fish, rabbits and birds. Unusual pets include snakes, ras, spiders and lizards. Some people have go even pigs!!
Many schools have got samll classroom pets, such as hamsters. Students take turns to take them home during the school holidays.

Did you know.......?

The British flag is called "The Union Jack". It consists of three other flags:

a).- The cross of Saint George (England)
b).- The cross of Saint Andrew (Scotland)
c).- The cross of Saint Patrick (Ireland)

This flag was designed in 1606

















The flag of The United States of America is often referred to as the "Stars and Stripes". The 13 stripes represent the 13 original colonies and, the stars , the modern states.




.- Mardi Gras in New Orleans:  Every year there is a carnival season in New Orleans, in the USA. It starts on 6th January. There are parades in the streets and a lot of parties. People eat King cakes, which are purple, green and gold. They have a small plastic baby in the cake that represents Jesus.
Mardi Gras is always on the last Tuesday before Lent.
It means " Fat Tuesday" in French because people celebrate and eat all day!!!!

.- Niagara Falls are 57 metres  high and every hour 2.5 million litres of water fall into the river below. It´s a popular place for tourists, and for daredevils!!!!

.- Many  teenagers in the UK have got jobs after school, at weekends or during the holidays. They often work in shops, restaurants and hairdressing salons. Teenagers mustn´t work for more than two hours on a school day.

.- Australians are the friendliest people in the world!!!!!. That´s what the results of many tourist surveys show. Tourists also think that Australia is the happiest and coolest country in the world!!!!!!

.- The world´s earliest version of rugby was introduced to Britain 2,000 years ago by Romans. The game was called Harpastum and it was a violent competition between entire villages. To win, the players tried to carry part of a pig or cow to their own village. Many people died playing the game.

.- Some cities in the USA and Canada have discovered an interesting way to stop crime in public areas-classical music!!!!. Supermarkets, train and bus stations have started playing classical music and it´s making young criminals disappear. Many of them think that classical music isn´t "cool", so they prfer being somewhere else...
